A.L. Buehrer was born in 1955 and grew up in the U.S. state of Montana, a land without a geographical center. After graduating from high school in 1973, he attended the University of Montana, where he received his undergraduate degree in English literature, cum laude, in 1977
He then pursued graduate studies at Columbia University, where he received his master's degree in English literature in 1979 and his Ph.D. in American studies in 1982. He currently teaches at the University of Montana, where he has taught for over twenty years.
